Sumo Shallow Tillage Machinery

Shallow Tillage with Sumo: Work Smarter, Protect Soil

At Sumo, we know soil health depends on balance. Our Shallow Tillage machinery is designed to manage residues, reduce weed pressure, and create the perfect conditions for crop establishment — all while protecting soil structure and minimising disturbance.

What Is Shallow Tillage?

Shallow tillage is the process of working the top layer of soil to manage crop residues, encourage chit of weeds, and create a fine, level seedbed. It helps retain soil moisture, protect structure, and reduce erosion while lowering fuel use and operational costs.

Our range:

160 - 300HP

4m – 6m

150mm

Best for: Breaking down ploughed or cultivated soils, managing residues, and levelling ground prior to drilling in a single pass.
Ideal Conditions: Post-plough or cultivated fields, high-trash stubbles where a level, consolidated surface is required ahead of drilling.
Low Disturbance Subsoiler Sumo-LDS-7

130-550HP

3-8m

350mm

Best for: Deep loosening and compaction relief while preserving soil structure and surface residues
Ideal Conditions: Compacted soils, permanent grassland, cover-cropped fields, or sensitive areas where minimal disturbance is essential

3-6m

350mm

Best for: Efficient one-pass subsoil loosening and minimal surface disturbance, integrated with other mounted or trailed implements
Ideal Conditions: Compacted arable fields, cover-cropped soils, or systems requiring careful residue preservation and multi-tool integration

100-500HP

3-7m

30-100mm

Best for: High-speed shallow cultivation, trash mixing, and seedbed levelling
Ideal Conditions: Post-harvest stubbles, lightly compacted soils, and fields requiring fast, uniform cultivation

240-600HP

4-6m

250mm

Best for: One-pass seedbed preparation combining surface levelling, consolidation, and subsoil loosening
Ideal Conditions: Fields requiring high-speed cultivation, moisture retention, and compaction alleviatio
Sumo 6m Multipress

100-450HP

3-6m

250mm

Best for: Breaking up ploughed or cultivated soil, levelling stubbles, and preparing consolidated seedbeds in one pass
Ideal Conditions: Post-plough or cultivation fields, high-residue stubbles, and soils requiring pre-compaction before drilling

Agronomy Tips for Effective Shallow Tillage -:

conservation agriculture seedlings growing in field
  1. Time it right
Carry out shallow passes in good conditions to avoid smearing and create tilth.
  2. Set the correct depth
Do just enough — only work the surface layers to preserve soil health and reduce fuel use.
  3. Target weed control
Use shallow tillage to stimulate weed seed germination before drilling, making control easier.
  4. Preserve residues
Retain and mix residues at the surface to protect against erosion, improve soil biology, and build organic matter.
  5. Rotate techniques
Incorporate shallow tillage with low-disturbance or deep tillage when needed to keep soils resilient and balanced long-term.
